Religious tourism

Abbeys, majestic Churches, ancient parish churches and sacred music in Tuscany!

When we talk about religious tourism in Tuscany, the first thing that comes to mind is pilgrimage to holy places; but religious tourism is a broader phenomenon, which also includes the architectural wonders of our region and unspoiled natural landscapes that are the perfect setting for peaceful moments and meditation. Religious tourism in Tuscany has always focused on the famous Via Francigena (the road to France), an ancient route which led from Canterbury to Rome and was part of a group of roads leading to the main religious sites of the Medieval period. Traveled by thousands of pilgrims since the Middle Ages, today the Via Francigena is a charming route where you might bump into pilgrims and tourists hoping to discover the wonders of Tuscany along the way: wonderful places such as San Quirico d’Orcia, Siena, San Gimignano, San Miniato and Lucca. Religious tourism in Tuscany also involves places of worship and meditation hidden in the green natural landscape: there are many hermitages where you can spend a few days meditating, praying, or even just exploring and admiring nature in complete tranquility. The wonderful Hermitage of Camaldoli near Arezzo, the famous Sanctuary of La Verna, linked to the life of St. Francis, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero near Livorno and many parish churches and abbeys scattered in the beautiful Tuscan countryside are some of the main Tuscan destinations for religious tourists. Religious tourism also involves the cities of art, visiting wonderful cathedrals and small churches hidden in the heart of the old town centers. Religious tourism in Tuscany is also related to sacred music: many music festivals take place all around the Region, like the Festival of Cortona or the Festival “Anima Mundi” in Pisa.
